Dear Editor
It seems that everyone wants smartphones to be a vital part of our life, just to make sure we keep buying those over-priced digital monsters and remain hooked on them.
Banks are still busy converting the code they wrote for PCs into a simpler form that will fit on a phone and in the process making it all more convoluted and less easy to read on the PC.
Smartphones aren’t that smart of course. By now most of us have realised that, but when you see the expensive ones advertised as a must-have prize you will note the smart things the phone can allegedly do. They tell us how good the camera is and how you can do wonderful things with editing the pictures, but they don’t tell us how much better a phone it is, perhaps because phone quality and clarity have not really improved in decades.
Rather than the add-ons associated with smartphones, I’d like to see real improvements in how they work before I remortgage the tool shed to invest in one. I want:
– crystal clear audio;
– a phone that reboots instantly;
– super fast connection time;
– phones that hold a charge and don’t need charging every other day;
– a screen that is easily readable without glasses or a magnifying glass;
– the ability to have the phone ready for use at all times, like the old fashioned and discarded land lines.
If producers cannot do these things they are letting users down.
Okay, some of these things are dependent on the network, but that shouldn’t stop manufacturers creating smartphones that actually live up to the hype and come close to being value for money, with basic abilities enriched to a degree that makes them really intelligent, really smart, really useful and less irritating.
