Letter of the day – The Conservative Woman

Dear Editor

What becomes of a nation that closes the door on its manufacturing industries? The hastened rush to net zero is beyond fanatical! The damage to our steelworks has rendered us almost impotent and reliant on foreign steel. The imposition of carbon tax as well as increases in tax and NI has increased the overhead and reduced profit to a point that many manufacturers are relocating overseas. All that means is more unemployment here and reduced profits and tax receipts. So we end up paying out more in benefits than we get in tax. Where do our (alleged) brightest and best think the money is coming from?

Large family-owned firms like JCB and Dyson Industries are in the line of fire for massive inheritance tax and that tax demand could see companies broken up and sold off.

The likely net result is even more unemployment and less tax for the chancellor to spend.

So what is the answer?

Our constitution says no government can bind any future government, but the tacit agreement has been to leave things as they are.

Perhaps a new party could sweep aside all that holds us back and create conditions for economic growth.  However, we must accept that net zero must be scrapped, if only because the cost of removing our less than 1 per cent contribution to world man-made CO2 will bankrupt us yet achieve nothing meaningful.

The body of scientific information available through eg the CO2 Coalition counters the arguments for CO2 reduction and should be considered, if only for a balanced view.  Science is never settled, scientists want scrutiny and want our knowledge to push forward.

So what will become of Britain?  Will we have the courage to reverse current trends and make our nation competitive and profitable and improve our national standard of living, or will we continue to race to the bottom?
