The Clock Is Ticking – HotAir

The United Arab Emirates has reported that a drone struck a nuclear power facility today, marking a dramatic escalation in the Middle East war in the midst of what keeps being reported as a “cease-fire.”

Quite a cease-fire.

Everybody assumes that Iran is behind the drone strike, but the flight path of the drone was unusual, having come from the west rather than the north or northwest, suggesting either that Iran sent it on an unusual flight path or that an Iranian proxy fired the drones off from outside the territory of Iran.

The United Arab Emirates said a drone strike had triggered a fire near its nuclear power station on Sunday, calling the incident a “dangerous escalation”.

Officials are investigating the source of the strike. The country’s defence ministry said three drones had entered the UAE from the “western border direction”.

While two were intercepted, the third drone struck an electrical generator “outside the inner perimeter” of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi, sparking a fire.

No injuries were reported and there was no impact on radiological safety levels, local authorities said.

The UAE’s foreign ministry called the strike an “unacceptable act of aggression” and said it had the right to respond to any hostilities.

It added that “the targeting of peaceful nuclear energy facilities is a flagrant violation of international law, the UN charter, and the principles of humanitarian law”.

Striking a nuclear facility sends a very clear message: Iran can strike anywhere, whenever it likes, and also that it thinks it has the upper hand in the fight.

The IAEA has been informed by the UAE that radiation levels at the Barakah NPP remain normal and no injuries were reported after a drone strike this morning caused a fire in an electrical generator located outside the inner site perimeter of the NPP. Emergency diesel generators are currently providing power to the NPP’s unit 3. The IAEA is following the situation closely and is in constant contact with the UAE authorities, ready to provide assistance if needed. DG @rafaelmgrossi expresses grave concern about the incident and says military activity that threatens nuclear safety is unacceptable. The DG reiterates call for maximum military restraint near any NPP to avoid the danger of a nuclear accident.

Iran has been working very hard to separate the UAE from other Gulf states, which have been far less enthusiastic about entering the war. As the conflict has escalated, the UAE has been closely collaborating with Israel, inviting Israeli troops into the country to participate in air defense, and conducting independent strikes on Iran in secret.

BREAKING: The IRGC Aerospace Force targeted the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in what appears to have been a symbolic strike, using a one-way attack drone that hit an electrical distribution facility and set it on fire.

The strike is said to be retaliation for the recent Emirati airstrikes against Iran’s energy infrastructure. Emirati authorities confirmed that the fire occurred outside the inner perimeter of the nuclear facility and stated that there was no impact on radiological safety levels or reactor operations.

No doubt Iran is doing its best to make President Trump look weak and helpless, playing into the domestic opposition within the United States. There has been a steady drumbeat of claims that Trump has TACO’ed, and the longer he restrains himself, the louder the cries and the greater the credibility of those charges.

Authorities in Abu Dhabi responded to a fire incident that broke out in an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra Region, caused by a drone strike. No injuries were reported, and there was no impact on radiological safety levels.

All precautionary measures have been taken, and further updates will be provided as they become available.

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the power plant or the readiness of its essential systems, and that all units are operating as normal.

The public is reminded to obtain information from official sources only, and to avoid spreading rumours or unverified information.

It’s hard to know what a drone could do to an actual nuclear reactor, as opposed to the surrounding facility. The containment structures are quite robust and would likely survive a modest-sized conventional explosive. However, nuclear plants have numerous exposed auxiliary systems that would be quite vulnerable, such as auxiliary power stations that help ensure cooling systems can run continuously.

As you may recall, a key factor in the meltdown at Fukushima was the auxiliary power system’s failure to maintain cooling.

I don’t see how President Trump can just ignore something like this. His threats have been directed at Iran’s power infrastructure, and now Iran has struck the UAE’s. Failure to respond forcefully would be extremely difficult to explain, even to his most ardent supporters.

Including me.

UPDATE: Trump says the clock is ticking.

To which I say: the clock has been ticking for weeks. Will the alarm ever go off?

According to Barak Ravid for Axios, citing three U.S. officials, U.S. President Donald J. Trump is set to hold his second meeting in just as many weeks with his National Security Team on Tuesday. Per an Axios report on last week’s meeting, Iran’s inability/unwillingness to shift left or right on key issues within the negotiation process has  ‘put military options back on the table.’

The last meeting was attended by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, White House Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.

UPDATE II: Iran threatens to invade UAE.

BREAKING: Iranian officials say Iran is fully prepared to seize the coastlines of the UAE and Bahrain if the UAE attempts to invade and seize Iranian-controlled islands in the Persian Gulf.

This is Iran’s direct response to Trump administration officials telling the UAE to invade Iran and seize Lavan Island. “Go take ’em! It would be UAE boots on the ground instead of US,” a former senior Trump security official told The Telegraph yesterday.

This would be extremely difficult for Iran to do. It would have to cross the Strait, presumably under fire and with no air support other than drones. Drones would be unable to defend the ships.
