Governor Bill Lee has expressed support for President-elect Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans, although he has yet to say whether he will send the Tennessee National Guard to assist with the efforts.

“I agree that he should, because he’s been elected, follow through with what he promised he would do for the American people,” Lee said. “To the degree that Tennessee participates in that, I look forward to seeing what his plans are going to be. We will be supportive of the strategies of the president.”

He added that Tennessee is ready to cooperate with the president but clarified that no specific request has been made to the state yet.

Lee did, however, tell reporters that he is continuing to work to advance his push for a statewide universal school voucher program, although support among lawmakers is still uncertain.

Some new lawmakers, including Representatives Aron Maberry (R-Clarksville-District 68) and Lee Reeves (R-Franklin-District 65), are backing the idea, while others, such as Senator Tom Hatcher, have not yet taken a stance.

“I think when people understand it, that they’ll advocate for it. We do know that the majority of Tennesseans … believe that school choice is appropriate, so we’ll continue to work for that,” Lee stated.

During the spring legislative session, Lee’s proposal advanced in both the House and Senate, but it failed to go through when leaders could not reach an agreement on the bill’s major components.
