The Tennessee Conservative Staff –

The Tennessee House and Senate are both scheduled to hear a bill next week that would require schools in the state to create policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by students, teachers, faculty, and staff.

House Bill 1630 (HB1630), sponsored by Representative Scott Cepicky (R-Culleoka-District 64), stipulates that all state universities and K-12 public and charter schools must adopt a policy for how AI is used for assignment purposes.

The original bill was amended to include a requirement that K-12 schools have a policy in place for the ’24-’25 school year. Universities may work on a policy to have in place by July 2025.

The bill passed the House Education Committee and will be heard in the Government Operations Committee on February 12.

The companion Senate Bill 1711 (SB1711), sponsored by Senator Joey Hensley (R-Hohenwald-District 28), is scheduled on the Senate Education Committee’s calendar for February 14.

The contact information for the members of the House Government Operations Committee and the Senate Education Committee is listed below should you wish to reach out to them before those meeting dates.
