The Tennessee Conservative [By Adelia Kirchner] –
According to a recent poll by Vanderbilt University, 84% of Tennesseans support the deportation of all illegal immigrants who have committed subsequent crimes.
While support for deportation drops quite a bit regarding illegal immigrants who have only committed the crime of being in the country illegally, the numbers still show that just over 50% of Tennesseans support it.
“Whether or not someone living in the country illegally has a criminal record dramatically changes Tennesseans’ views about deportation,” the Vanderbilt poll summary reads. “If they have a criminal record, 84 percent of voters strongly or somewhat support deportation, cutting across all affiliations and demographics. If the individual does not have a criminal record, support decreases dramatically. Those who are neutral double when the individual does not have a criminal record.”
Of interest to conservatives, despite the fact that this new poll was conducted by a left-leaning academic institution, the results aren’t too far off from The Tennessee Conservative’s own findings.
The Tennessee Conservative has been following the state’s illegal immigration issue for a long period of time now and has conducted several polls and surveys asking Tennessee residents for their opinion.
Back in February of this year, a survey conducted by The Tennessee Conservative showed that 99% of respondents disagree with Tennessee GOP leadership’s stance that illegal immigration is a “federal issue.”
Less than 1% of those respondents answered with “I Trust the Federal Government to Handle It.”
Survey results also showed that when asked to rate their concern about illegal immigration in the State of Tennessee on a scale of 1 to 100 (1 being “not worried” and 100 being “extremely worried”), respondents gave an average rating of 96.
Additionally, back in October, The Tennessee Conservative reported that approximately 5,300 residents in parts of Murfreesboro and Smyrna (TN House District 49), completed a legislative survey where half of all respondents listed illegal immigration as “a top issue the state should address.”
This survey showed that 86% of Tennesseans felt the state should be doing more to combat illegal immigration, even if it wasn’t their top concern.
