IT HAS emerged that Metropolitan Police officers who arrested an elderly Christian campaigner for protesting near an abortion clinic treated the incident as an ‘emergency’. Does this not vindicate former Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s exposure of the left-wing bias of British police forces, particularly the Met, which led to her sacking from the cabinet last November?
The Christian Today website reported on January 20: ‘Judgment has been reserved in the case of a street preacher prosecuted for holding a sign quoting Psalm 139:13 near an abortion clinic in Ealing. Stephen Green, who is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre (CLC), was in court in Uxbridge on Friday after being prosecuted by Ealing Council under section 67 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
‘Charges were brought against the 72-year-old after he held the sign within the perimeter of a “buffer zone” on 6 February 2023.
The Christian Legal Centre said in a statement that the abortion clinic staff member who reported him to the police recorded: ‘I received a text message from the police saying they were treating it as an emergency.’ If found guilty, Mr Green could be sent to prison for six months.
Mr Green’s legal ordeal continues amidst the news that a volunteer Met special constable told Christian singer Harmonie London, who regularly performs gospel music to Oxford Street shoppers and has more than 300,000 subscribers on YouTube, that she was ‘not allowed to sing church songs outside of church grounds’. After telling the singer she could not perform, and getting the law so badly wrong, the officer then stuck her tongue out at the camera. Following the media furore, the Met has now apologised ‘for the offence’ caused’ and admitted that ‘the officer was mistaken in saying church songs cannot be sung outside of church grounds’.
However it is still worth recalling at this point what Suella Braverman wrote in The Times last year:
‘Unfortunately, there is a perception that senior police officers play favourites when it comes to protesters. During covid, why was it that lockdown objectors were given no quarter by public order police, yet Black Lives Matter demonstrators were enabled, allowed to break rules and even greeted with officers taking the knee?
‘Right-wing and nationalist protesters who engage in aggression are rightly met with a stern response, yet pro-Palestinian mobs displaying almost identical behaviour are largely ignored, even when clearly breaking the law. I have spoken to serving and former police officers who have noted this double standard.
‘Football fans are even more vocal about the tough way they are policed as compared to politically connected minority groups who are favoured by the left.
‘It may be that senior officers are more concerned with how much flak they are likely to get than whether this perceived unfairness alienates the majority. The government has a duty to take a broader view.’
The reality is that the Conservative-led administrations since 2010 have not taken the ‘broader view’ recommended by the former Home Secretary, whose sacking for telling the truth regarding the left-wing bias of the police was surely to be expected under the Cameronite Conservatives. The narrow neo-Marxist ideology seemingly promoted by the Metropolitan elite has seemingly become more deeply entrenched in the police after 14 years of Conservative rule.
The public now seem to be aware that there is a bias in the culture of the policing we are seeing, evident not only in the above, but also in incidents such as the apparent appeasement of eco-fanatics blocking roads and preventing people from going about their ordinary business. Even under a Labour government the police may be forced to deal with such disruption to the economic life of Britain’s major cities. But orthodox Christians who oppose abortion, the imposition of transgender ideology in schools and the power of Stonewall generally should expect no impartiality from the police under a Labour government.
What power would there be in a once Christian land to stop police forces from going a step further, and becoming unashamed left-wing militias empowered to crush dissent from the neo-Marxist diktats of the secular State?
