WE should never forget that golden rule – follow the money – something most of the mainstream media here have singularly failed to do in the case of the pro-Palestinian protests that have swept the world and taken over our streets. The Guardian for example has claimed that the protests are triggered by ‘ordinary people “disgusted and horrified” by the suffering of the Gazan population,’ as Eliyahu Tulshinski observed in a recent Front Line News article. The truth as he argues is rather more complex. The protests are far from ‘organic’ and, he reveals, have wealthy financial backers.
The Free Press were first to report the story he features and it’s a shocker, though why I should say so I don’t know since we have already in our own pages tracked the ruthless US billionaires behind both Net Zero climate zealotry and the transgenderism march through the institutions.
Furthermore we already knew from a New York Post investigation that ‘the far-left billionaire kingmaker George Soros has funnelled more than $15million since 2016 to the various groups behind the recent pro-Palestine protests’. Its examination of Open Society Foundations records shows Soros’s grant-making network gave $13.7million through Tides Center, ‘a deep-pocketed lefty advocacy group that sponsors several nonprofits who’ve justified Hamas’s bloody attacks’.
And now comes the revelation that the generous funding of ‘an uber-wealthy’ American-born couple, tech entrepreneur Neville Roy Singham and his wife Jodie Evans is behind several of these ‘not-so-organic’ protests. According to the Free Press‘s investigation: ‘Since 2017, Singham has been the main funder of The People’s Forum, which has co-organised at least four protests after 1,400 innocent Israelis were slaughtered by Hamas on October 7. One rally, in Times Square, happened on October 8 before Israel had even counted its dead.
‘Based in Midtown Manhattan, The People’s Forum calls itself a “movement incubator for working-class and marginalised communities to build unity across historic lines of division at home and abroad”. But a review of public disclosure forms shows that Singham and Evans have donated over $20.4million to The People’s Forum from 2017 to 2022 through a series of shell organisations and donor advisory groups – accounting for nearly all of the group’s funding.
‘Singham’s wealth stems from Thoughtworks, a software consulting company that he launched in 1993 in Chicago and sold in August 2017 to private equity firm Apax Partners for $785million. That same year, The People’s Forum was founded and set up on the ground floor of a multi-storey building on 37th Street just blocks from Times Square; Evans was also installed as one of its three board members. As of 2021, the organisation employed 13 staff members and held more than $13.6million in total assets.’
This is not all. The investigation into the fabulously wealthy Mr Singham, born of a Cuban mother and Sri Lankan father, shows him to be ‘more than just a Marxist with deep pockets’. He is also an avid China sympathiser and advocate who lives in Shanghai with close ties to at least four propaganda news sites which boost the Chinese Communist Party’s image abroad. Though later to become so rich, he never gave up the radical Marxist politics of his youth. In a 2008 profile in Fortune, Singham said that Venezuela under left-wing populist Hugo Chavez was a ‘phenomenally democratic place’ and that China’s economic policies should serve as a model for capitalist economies. ‘China is teaching the West that the world is better off with a dual system of both free-market adjustments and long-term planning.’ There we have it.
His wife fully supports this Chinese ideal too. Four months ago in an hour-long virtual talk she said of China: ‘The idea that it’s an authoritarian system that controls everything is, like, so crazy, what a crazy notion that we’ve been sold.’ The people of China are not oppressed, she added, because ‘I know what it’s like to be with people who are oppressed’.
And despite her staunch support of the Muslim residents in Gaza, she’s bizarrely justified the their oppression in China, where more than a million Uyghur Muslims have been forcibly detained in ‘re-education camps’, leading to reports of beating and systemic rape.
The People’s Forum headquarters hosts classes such as ‘Lenin and the Path to Revolution’, praising countries including China and Cuba which have ‘smashed the shackles of Western imperialism’, as well as such seminars as ‘Healthcare Under Siege and Apartheid’, blaming Israel for ‘discriminatory policies’ and ‘genocide’ in Gaza.
Which are the ‘global’ forces as work here? And who is being ‘played’? I think it’s the thousands of deluded young people who have taken to the streets drenched in their uncritical woke education, legitimised as social justice but in reality hard Marxist, and have proved such easy targets for exploitation by the likes of Mr Singham and his wife with the money to do it.
