A bill sponsored by Senator Mark Pody (R-Lebanon-District 17) has been assigned to the General Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee with no date set for it to be considered again.

In summary, Senate Bill 0620 (SB0620) “As introduced, enacts the “Families’ Rights and Responsibilities Act,” which declares that the ability of a parent to direct the upbringing, education, health care, and mental health of that parent’s child is a fundamental right. – Amends TCA Title 36 and Title 49.”

As previously reported by The Tennessee Conservative, this bill’s “main purpose is to define and establish parental rights within the context of government interference or usurpation of those rights. In a nutshell, the purpose of the bill is to state clearly, and unequivocally that parents in Tennessee do not co-parent with the government.”

The House Bill version (HB1414) has been assigned to the House Children & Family Affairs Subcommittee but has yet to be slated on their calendar to be heard.

There is much debate in America over parental rights in regards to their children’s educational and medical decisions. This nine-page bill’s aim is to unquestionably leave all rights and decisions in the hands of Tennessee parents rather than allowing the government to step in and hide important information from parents or offer services and education to minors without parental knowledge or consent.

This is not the first time this bill has been pushed back. And now, with no date set for further discussion, it remains to be seen if the bill will move any further in both the Senate and the House.
