NEXT March, Ireland will hold two referendums on possible changes to the country’s near century-old constitution. It is proposed that a highly significant use of the word ‘woman’ is removed. It is suggested that the constitution’s recognition of the endless unpaid labour that women do should also be removed. In Saturday’s Daily Mail, Laura Perrins argued that mothers should be revered and not denigrated. You can read her article here.
It is somewhat depressing to reflect that I wrote a similar article for the Daily Mail in 1991 which asked ‘Why must we treat mothers as second-class citizens?’ and again, 20 years later in 2014, saying mothers should be cherished, not despised.
From second-class citizenship to cancellation in just three decades.
