The Tennessee Conservative [By Olivia Lupia] –
On Tuesday, Tennessee’s 2024 presidential electors officially cast the state’s 11 electoral votes for President-elect Donald J. Trump.
The Volunteer State has one elector per congressional district and two at large in a winner-take-all system where all electors are legally required to cast their votes for the candidate who wins the popular vote in the state.
The electors gathered in the Tennessee House chamber along with state leaders including Governor Bill Lee and Secretary of State Tre Hargett to formally cast Tennessee’s electoral ballots and sign the certificate of vote.
This document will be submitted to the U.S. Congress certifying the presidential election results.
Tennessee saw a record turnout of approximately 3.8 million voters during the November 5, 2024 election with the Trump-Vance ticket receiving nearly two million of those votes compared to the Harris-Walz ticket which received just over one million.
As states across the nation also submitted their certifications, Tuesday saw President-elect Trump officially secure his return to the White House as he received 312 electoral votes, well beyond the 270 necessary to be declared the presidential winner. These electoral ballots will be counted and certified by Congress on January 6th, 2024.
But not all are satisfied with the results.
According to a post on X from the Senate Judiciary Committee, three Democrat senators, including the committee chairman Richard Durban, have introduced legislation attempting to abolish the Electoral College, despite its enshrinement in the Constitution.
Amending the Constitution is no simple matter, and the bill will most likely amount to a mere symbolic gesture as the Democrats have a slim-to-none chance of mustering the 2/3 Congressional majority required to propose an amendment, let alone the necessary 3/4 ratification by the states.
Calls for abolishing the Electoral College have come almost exclusively from Democrats, yet several instances where the electoral vote did not match the popular vote favored Republicans. For example, George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald Trump in both 2016 and 2024.
It seems that Democrats are simply looking for a scapegoat on which to pin their losses instead of acknowledging that their disastrous and distasteful policies simply serve to drive voters further away, clearly evidenced by the electoral and popular victories for Trump and the MAGA movement in November and again this past Tuesday.
